We Can't Afford these Budget Cuts

Advocacy on State Budget

I am writing today to ask for your help in letting Harrisburg know that we can’t afford more homelessness in Pennsylvania. If Governor Corbett’s budget becomes law, as proposed, efficient and cost-effective safety net programs that help our poorest and most vulnerable neighbors will be gone.

We are not alone in our concern about the direction this PROPOSED budget takes the Commonwealth. In fact, in the nearly 40 face to face legislative visits we have done so far this spring throughout the state, we have found that MANY legislators, Democrat and Republican alike, share our concerns.

Deadline for action: 6/29/2012.

Thank you and Followup

Senate Budget - Please restore General Assistance

What’s Next?

Please take a moment to thank the Senate for taking leadership on this issue. We want to let them know that we appreciate that they are listening. At the same time, we want to make sure they know that there are still changes we want to see made in the final budget, most importantly restoring funding for General Assistance.

Take action to end additional homelessness in PA

Restore General Assistance

Please join me in the effort to ensure that more Pennsylvanians do not end up homeless as a result of the elimination of General Assistance (GA) in the state budget. While GA is not a program on which the Housing Alliance has traditionally focused, we are convinced that its elimination will lead to more homelessness, negatively impact the business climate and quality of life in our communities, and further strain an already-saturated service system. So we are now compelled to act.

GA is a last-resort safety net program. If it is eliminated, as it is in the budget passed last week by the Senate, more than 68,000 Pennsylvanians will wake up on July 1st with no income and no other place to turn. They will have no place to go to the bathroom or to change their clothes. The full impact of eliminating GA, not just on these individuals but also on the quality of life and the business climate of our communities, is difficult to imagine. And all of this will cost taxpayers even more, as those who end up on the streets will be forced to seek out even more expensive services, such as homeless shelters and emergency rooms.
